Let’s face it - dogs are opportunistic snack bandits. One second you’re snacking on some chocolate, the next your dog is giving you the eyes. You know the ones. The “surely one bite won’t kill me” eyes.
Unfortunately, when it comes to some human foods, one bite might actually be a really bad idea. So before your pup turns into a furry little vacuum cleaner again, let’s talk about the stuff that should never make it from your plate to their mouth.
🍫 1. Chocolate: The Forbidden Fudge
We all love chocolate. Your dog? They love the smell. But what’s a treat for you is toxic for them. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize slower than we do. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Baking chocolate is especially very (very) bad.
Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, rapid breathing, even seizures.
🧅 2. Onions, Chives, and Garlic: Vampire Repellent, Dog Danger
Whether raw, cooked, powdered, or hiding in your soup - onions and garlic can cause a dog’s red blood cells to break down, leading to anemia. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs can still be affected if they consume a large enough amount.
Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, anemia if large quantities are consumed.
🍇 3. Grapes & Raisins: Tiny Fruit, Huge Problem
Grapes and raisins are mysteriously toxic to dogs. Scientists still aren’t totally sure why, but the outcome can be kidney failure - and fast. One grape can be enough, but the toxic dose can vary from over one pound of grapes or raisins to as little as one serving.
Why? Nobody really knows! Grapes that are grown organically seem to cause as many problems as those that have been treated with pesticides. Tartaric acid is a chemical that is found in grapes, and could possibly be one of the problems. Studies are still being run to determine the exact cause.
Symptoms: Vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, and kidney issues (including kidney failure).
☕ 4. Caffeine: Dogs Prefer Zoomies the Natural Way
Coffee, energy drinks, tea, and even chocolate-covered espresso beans are a double whammy of toxins for dogs. Caffeine amps up the nervous system in a way that makes fetch look like a nap.
Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, panting, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, and even death.
🍺 5. Alcohol: Nope. Just Nope.
Dogs + booze = disaster. Even small amounts of beer, wine, or liquor can lead to serious problems.
Symptoms: Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, disorientation, decreased body temperature, difficulty breathing
🧁 6. Xylitol: The Sneaky Sweetener
This sugar substitute is found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter, and baked goods - and it's super toxic. Xylitol causes a rapid release of insulin in dogs, leading to a dramatic drop in blood sugar.
Symptoms: Weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures, and potential liver failure.
*Important note: Xylitol is sometimes called birch sugar or wood sugar. Please be sure to read ingredients!
🦴 Bonus Myth Buster: Cooked Bones
You’d think giving a dog a bone is a no-brainer, right? Wrong. Cooked bones (especially chicken or pork) can splinter and cause choking, intestinal tears, or blockages.
👩🍳 Quick Tip from the Dog Chef:
If you love spoiling your pup with people food (we see you 👀), stick to dog-safe options like:
-
Plain cooked chicken
-
Carrots
-
Blueberries
-
Apples (no seeds!)
-
Pumpkin
-
Peanut butter (without xylitol!)
🚨 Final Thoughts
Please keep in mind that this is not a complete list of everything that could be harmful for your dog. The items listed tend to be the most common toxic foods that are consumed by dogs, and veterinary offices field many phone calls from concerned owners after their dog has eaten one of these foods.
Your dog doesn’t know what’s safe - they just trust you. So keep the snacks wholesome, the chocolate out of reach, and the onions on your burger only.
If your dog manages to snatch something toxic, give your veterinarian a call right away. If it is after hours, you should contact a poison control center for advice.
The ASPCA Poison Control Center is a great resource 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! They are always open and always ready to help. 888-426-4435
